A Burner That Clicks But Never Lights
If your gas burner clicks but won't light, shut the knob off, let the kitchen air out, and clean the burner cap and ports before you do anything else. Often that's the whole repair. What the clicking actually tells you
That click is the spark igniter firing, so if you hear it, the electrical side is doing its job. The gas side is the suspect. If one burner makes no sound at all, that igniter is probably dirty, cracked, or still wet. If every burner clicks nonstop with the knobs off, a switch or the spark module is stuck. Take ten seconds to note which pattern you've got: clicking with no flame, no click at all, or clicking that won't quit. That one detail tells us where to start before we load the truck.
Cause one: a clogged or wet burner (cheapest fix)
Boil-overs cause most of these. Pasta water, marinara, bacon grease, it all runs into the burner ports and hardens where gas needs to reach the spark. Near the coast, salt air corrodes the igniter tip too. Out in the valley it's usually baked-on grease. The tell is a burner that lights weak on one side, or lights late with a small pop. Cleaning the cap, the ring of ports, and the area around the igniter takes care of a surprising number of these calls. Costs you some scrubbing and no parts.
Cause two: igniter or spark module trouble
Igniters are ceramic with a metal tip, and they crack. They also get soaked when you wipe down the cooktop, and a wet igniter won't spark until it dries all the way, sometimes a full day later. One burner that never clicks while the others do points at that igniter or its wiring. All burners clicking continuously points at the spark module or a shorted knob switch sending a constant signal. Shut the cooktop off at the breaker and call. Continuous sparking with gas flowing isn't something to live with while you wait.
Cause three: gas supply and the safety valve
Some ranges put a safety valve behind each burner that only opens once it senses heat or spark. When that valve fails you get a perfect spark and zero gas. Supply is the other possibility. Did the gas company work on your street lately? Is the shutoff valve behind the range partly closed after somebody slid the unit out? In condos and older LA apartment buildings we sometimes find a building shutoff got touched during unrelated work. Don't chase gas fittings yourself. That's where homeowner checks stop.
Safe checks you can do right now, and what we do next
Safe: with the stove cold, pull the burner cap and ring, wash them, dry them all the way, and reseat them square. Clear the little ports with a paperclip. Not a toothpick, those snap off inside. Check that the igniter tip is dry and confirm your other burners still work. Unsafe: opening the range body, touching gas lines, bypassing a valve. Smell gas? Leave and call the gas utility first. We show up with a meter, test spark voltage and valve continuity, verify gas pressure at the manifold, and replace only the failed part. Call us and tell us the click pattern.

Why do all my burners click even when the stove is off?
Usually a stuck knob switch or a dead spark module, often after a spill soaked the control area. Shut the range off at the breaker and call us. Constant sparking near gas isn't worth waiting out.
I cleaned it and it lights slowly with a pop. Still a problem?
Yes. Delayed ignition means gas pools up before it catches, which points to partly blocked ports or a weak spark. Clean again and dry it completely. If the pop comes back, have the igniter and burner checked.
