Safe things to check first
Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.
- 1Pull the grates and burner caps, then look for food crust plugging the little gas ports.
- 2Check the breaker panel for a tripped double-pole breaker feeding the cooktop.
- 3Wipe the igniter electrode dry if something boiled over recently, and let it air out.
- 4Make sure the gas shutoff valve under the counter or behind the drawer is fully open.

Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired?
No, the glass is one piece and gets replaced rather than patched. A crack lets spills reach the wiring below, so we tell people to stop using that zone. We check whether the glass is available for your model before we schedule work.
Why does my gas burner smell for a second when lighting?
A brief whiff as the gas ignites is normal. A smell that hangs around, or one you notice with every knob off, is a different story. Shut the gas off, ventilate, get out of the space, and call your gas utility first.
Do you work on cooktops in apartments and condos?
Yes. Tight cutouts, shared walls, and HOA access rules are routine for us. If the building wants a certificate of insurance or a specific elevator window, tell us and we will plan the visit around it.
Is induction repairable, or is it a throwaway?
Often repairable. What usually fails is the cooling fan, a temperature sensor, or one section of the power board, not the whole unit. Diagnosis tells us which one. We test the coil and the board before we recommend replacing anything.
My electric burner heats unevenly. What causes that?
Usually the infinite switch cycling wrong, or an aging coil element with a hot spot. A warped pan makes it look worse than it is. We test switch cycling and element resistance so cookware problems do not get mistaken for a real failure.
How long does a cooktop repair take?
Most single-burner and igniter jobs finish in one visit once we have the part in hand. Control boards and glass panels may need ordering. You will hear which situation you are in during the diagnosis, not after.
