Smell Gas Near the Stove? Do These Things, in This Order
If you smell rotten eggs in your kitchen, get everyone outside and call the gas utility's emergency line from your cell phone before you touch anything. Gas smells are one of the few appliance problems where you act first and diagnose later. The smell might be faint near the oven door, or it might hit you the second you walk in the front door. Either way, here's the order we tell every Los Angeles homeowner to follow, from Santa Monica apartments to Valley single-family homes.

Do these things right now, in this order
1. Stop using anything that sparks. No light switches, no garage door opener, no vape, no candles. 2. Turn off the burner knobs and the oven if they're on. 3. Open windows and exterior doors. 4. Get everyone, including pets, outside and away from the building. 5. From outside, on your cell phone, call the gas utility's emergency line. They come out for gas odor calls around the clock. If the smell is strong, or you hear hissing, skip straight to step 4. Walk out. Don't stop to pack, unplug, or take pictures.
What not to do, even if the smell seems small
Don't flip any switch, on or off, because a switch makes a small arc. Don't start your car in an attached garage. Don't use a fan to clear the air. Don't go hunting for the leak with a lighter, a match, or a phone flashlight held right up against a fitting. Don't pull the range out from the wall either. That flex connector behind it is the last thing you want to stress. And leave the back panel and the gas shutoff valve alone if you're not sure which way it turns. Utility crews carry meters that read what your nose can't.
When to leave and when to shut things off
Leave if the smell is strong, if it's spreading past the kitchen, if anyone feels dizzy or nauseous or has a headache, or if you hear hissing near the appliance. In a condo or stacked apartment, knock on neighbors' doors on your way out and tell the building manager. Gas travels through shared walls and chases. If, and only if, you can safely reach the shutoff valve behind or beside the range without moving the unit or squeezing into a tight space, turn it. Otherwise skip it. The utility can shut gas at the meter, and that's their job.
Faint smells that might not be an emergency
A short whiff when you first light a burner is common, since gas flows a second before it ignites. Same with a brief odor during oven preheat while dust burns off. What isn't normal: a smell with no burner running, a smell that lingers after cooking, a yellow or orange lazy flame instead of steady blue, soot on your pots, or a pilot light that keeps going out. Coastal homes in Venice and San Pedro get corroded burner parts from salt air. Valley heat and dust clog orifices. Both show up as a weak, smelly flame.
Call the utility first, then call us
The gas company handles the leak. They check the meter, the line to your house, and the connection at the appliance. They may red-tag the range and shut it off. That's where we come in. Once the utility clears the building, we take the appliance side: clogged burner orifices, a bad safety valve, a worn igniter that lets gas pool before it lights, a cracked burner cap, or a thermocouple that won't hold the pilot. We work on gas ranges, wall ovens, and cooktops across LA and the surrounding states. We're an independent shop, so we service all major brands. Call us when you're ready to schedule.
Smell Gas Near the Stove? Do These Things, in This Order — what people ask
Is it normal to smell gas for a second when I turn a burner on?
A brief whiff at ignition is common, since gas flows just before the flame catches. If the smell lasts more than a couple seconds, or shows up with no burner on, treat it as a leak.
Should I turn off the breaker to my kitchen?
No. Flipping a breaker creates a spark, and the panel may sit in the very air you're worried about. Leave electrical alone, get outside, and let the utility handle shutoffs.
My oven smells like gas but the flame looks fine. What now?
Call the utility to confirm there's no leak. If they clear it, the cause is often a slow igniter, a worn safety valve, or a partly blocked burner port. We can diagnose those.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or type it into the form. Leaking, buzzing, not draining, a blinking code. We ask a few questions and write down your brand and model so the van gets loaded right.
- Step 2
We pick a window
We build arrival windows around real traffic instead of wishful thinking. Tell us about gate codes, HOA elevator hours, or a tight parking situation, and we plan the route around it.
- Step 3
Diagnose, then repair
The tech opens the machine, tests the part that failed, and tells you what he found in plain words. Nothing gets ordered or replaced until you approve it. Common parts ride along in the van.

Why homeowners call us
- Stacked units and tight closetsApartment and condo laundry usually sits in a closet with two inches of clearance. We pull, service, and reset stacked washer-dryer sets without wrecking the drywall or the drain pan underneath.
- Coastal air, valley heatNear the water, salt air rusts hinges and control boards. Inland, heat cooks compressors and dryer vents. So we check for the wear your zip code causes, not only the part you called about.
- HOA-aware visitsBuildings have rules: loading dock windows, service elevators, insurance paperwork, quiet hours. We work inside those limits so your manager stays calm and the repair still happens on schedule.
- Four states, one callCalifornia, Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon. Same intake, same questions, same plain talk about the repair. One number to remember when the second home or the rental unit acts up.
- All major brands, gas & electricEvery major appliance brand, gas and electric, handled by an independent shop.
- Straight answersIf replacing beats repairing, you hear it from us first.
