The Coil-Cleaning Habit That Saves Refrigerators
If your fridge runs nonstop, keeps soft ice cream, and warms the kitchen next to it, start with the condenser coils. Nine times out of ten in LA homes, nobody has touched them in years. Dust, pet hair, and valley grit pack in and choke the airflow. Here is what that does to the fridge, and the five-minute habit that keeps it from happening.

What Dirty Coils Actually Do To Your Fridge
Condenser coils dump heat out of the sealed system. Pack them with lint and dust and that heat has nowhere to go. The compressor keeps running toward a temperature it can never hit, so you get long run times, a warm kitchen, and a bigger power bill. Over months, the compressor and the condenser fan motor are running hot every hour of the day. Heat kills both. We open a lot of fridges where the sealed system is fine, but the fan motor seized or the compressor overheats and trips on its overload. Most of that traces back to a coil nobody cleaned.
The Five-Minute Habit
Unplug the fridge first. That is the one safety step that matters here, and it is not optional. Pull the toe-kick grille off the bottom front if your model has one, since it usually snaps or unclips by hand. Vacuum the coils and the floor space behind the grille with a brush attachment. A long flexible coil brush reaches deeper. If your coils sit on the back, roll the unit out and vacuum the whole rear face. Do not remove screwed-on panels, do not touch wiring, do not poke at the compressor. Snap the grille back on, plug in, push it back.
How Often, And Why LA Changes The Answer
Twice a year is a fair baseline. Set it with daylight saving time so you remember it. Some homes need more than that. Pets that shed push you to every three months, because hair mats onto coils like felt. Valley houses from Van Nuys out to Woodland Hills pull in fine dust all summer, especially with the windows open. Coastal places in Santa Monica or Long Beach deal with salt air, which corrodes the fins and helps grime stick. Stacked apartment kitchens with tight clearances trap heat, so coils there load up fast. Check yours once, see how bad it looks, and set your interval from what you find.
Signs It Is Already Past Prevention
Cleaning helps a healthy fridge. It will not fix a failed part. Call for service when the compressor runs constantly and the food still sits above 40 degrees. Same if you hear a click every few minutes followed by silence, which is an overload cycling. A hot, rattling, or dead condenser fan is a real repair, not a cleaning. Frost building on the back wall of the freezer, water pooling under the crisper, or a freezer that works while the fridge side stays warm all point at defrost or airflow faults inside. Those need a tech with a meter. Reach us.
Small Things That Help Between Cleanings
Give the unit breathing room. An inch or two at the back and sides makes a real difference, though condo and apartment kitchens rarely allow much. Keep the top clear of stacked boxes and cereal. Check the door gaskets, too. Close the door on a dollar-bill-sized strip of paper and see if it drags when you pull it out. A loose gasket makes the compressor work as hard as dirty coils do. Wipe the gaskets down with warm soapy water so crumbs and sticky spills do not hold them open. If your fridge sits next to an oven or in direct afternoon sun, expect it to run longer.
The Coil-Cleaning Habit That Saves Refrigerators — what people ask
Do all refrigerators have coils I can reach?
No. Many newer models tuck the coils behind a sealed back panel, and we do not want you pulling that off. If there is no removable front grille and no exposed rear coil, leave it to a tech during service.
Can I use a garden hose or water on the coils?
Never. Water and electrical components do not mix, and wet dust turns to mud in the fins. Dry vacuum with a brush attachment, plus a coil brush for depth. That is the whole method.
My fridge got quieter after cleaning. Is that normal?
Yes. Clean coils let the compressor cycle off instead of running nonstop, and less run time means less noise. If it stays loud, or the noise is a rattle or a grind, the condenser fan likely needs attention.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or type it into the form. Leaking, buzzing, not draining, a blinking code. We ask a few questions and write down your brand and model so the van gets loaded right.
- Step 2
We pick a window
We build arrival windows around real traffic instead of wishful thinking. Tell us about gate codes, HOA elevator hours, or a tight parking situation, and we plan the route around it.
- Step 3
Diagnose, then repair
The tech opens the machine, tests the part that failed, and tells you what he found in plain words. Nothing gets ordered or replaced until you approve it. Common parts ride along in the van.

Why homeowners call us
- Stacked units and tight closetsApartment and condo laundry usually sits in a closet with two inches of clearance. We pull, service, and reset stacked washer-dryer sets without wrecking the drywall or the drain pan underneath.
- Coastal air, valley heatNear the water, salt air rusts hinges and control boards. Inland, heat cooks compressors and dryer vents. So we check for the wear your zip code causes, not only the part you called about.
- HOA-aware visitsBuildings have rules: loading dock windows, service elevators, insurance paperwork, quiet hours. We work inside those limits so your manager stays calm and the repair still happens on schedule.
- Four states, one callCalifornia, Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon. Same intake, same questions, same plain talk about the repair. One number to remember when the second home or the rental unit acts up.
- All major brands, gas & electricEvery major appliance brand, gas and electric, handled by an independent shop.
- Straight answersIf replacing beats repairing, you hear it from us first.
