What the ice is actually telling you
Frost is moisture that came from somewhere. A freezer that seals well and defrosts on schedule stays mostly dry, with a light dusting at worst. Thick white buildup means warm room air keeps sneaking in and freezing on the coldest surface it touches. Where the ice sits is a clue. Ice ringing the door gasket points at the seal or the door. Ice packed on the back panel behind your food points at the defrost system. Ice on the floor of the freezer or dripping into the fridge below points at a plugged drain. Start with the door: gaskets, latching, and loading
This is the cheapest cause family and the most common one in LA apartments where the fridge sits in a tight galley kitchen. The rubber gasket gets stiff, gets torn, or gets sticky with syrup and stops sealing. A door that's blocked by a tall ketchup bottle never fully closes. Stacked units and condo kitchens often have the fridge crammed so the door swings against a wall and bounces back open. Coastal humidity makes a marginal seal much worse — more moisture in the air means more frost per open. Valley heat does the same by widening the temperature gap.
Defrost system and a clogged drain
Every frost-free freezer heats its cooling coil on a cycle to melt off frost, then sends the water down a drain to a pan underneath. Two things go wrong. The defrost cycle stops running, so frost never melts and builds until it chokes airflow — you'll notice the fridge side warming up while the freezer still feels cold. Or the cycle runs fine but the drain is plugged with ice or gunk, so meltwater backs up and refreezes as a sheet on the freezer floor. Both need diagnosis with tools, not guesses. Both are common on units past their first decade.
Safe checks you can do right now
Close the door on a dollar bill or piece of paper. If it slides out with no drag, the gasket isn't sealing there. Walk the whole perimeter. Wipe the gasket with warm soapy water and check for cracks or flat spots. Look for food or a bin blocking the door. Confirm the freezer setting is around 0°F and hasn't been bumped. Check whether the interior light stays on with the door shut — a stuck switch can keep it heating inside. Stop there. Don't pull the rear panel, don't chip ice with a knife, and don't pour boiling water in.us

Can I just keep scraping the ice out?
You can buy time, but it comes back and airflow stays choked. Scraping with a metal tool risks puncturing the coil or liner behind the panel. Fix the cause instead — usually a seal, a defrost part, or a plugged drain.
Why is water pooling in my fridge below the freezer?
Usually a blocked defrost drain. Meltwater can't reach the pan, so it overflows into the fresh food section or freezes into a sheet. It's a common repair and doesn't mean the whole unit is done.
Does humid coastal air really matter?
Yes. Near the beach, every door opening lets in wetter air, so a slightly weak gasket shows heavy frost much sooner than the same fridge inland. Inland heat causes it too, from a bigger temperature difference.
