Chest and Upright Freezers
Your freezer sits in the garage in Van Nuys or a condo storage nook near the beach, and now the ice cream is soft. You want a straight answer: fix it or haul it out? Some freezer faults are simple parts swaps. Others tell us the sealed system is done. Here is how we sort one from the other. Call us if you want us to look.

Age matters, but not the way you think
A freezer's age alone doesn't decide it. What matters is how the cabinet has aged. Garage units in valley heat run long cycles all summer. Coastal units near Santa Monica or Long Beach fight salt air, so hinges rust and gaskets get chalky. Look at the door seal. If it's cracked and the lid or door doesn't pull shut on its own, warm air has been sneaking in for a while. A ten-year-old freezer with a clean cabinet and a bad thermostat is worth fixing. A freezer with a rusted-through floor and frost on the inner walls is telling you something different.
Fault types that usually come back to life
Most freezer calls we run turn out to be one of a handful of parts. A failed defrost heater or defrost thermostat in a frost-free upright, so ice builds behind the back wall and airflow chokes. A tired evaporator fan that whines or stops, leaving the top warm and the bottom frozen solid. A door gasket that no longer seals. A start relay on the compressor. A thermostat or control board reading wrong. None of that touches refrigerant. These are parts we can source and install, and the freezer runs like it did before. Those are the good calls.
Faults that point toward replacement
A refrigerant leak in a sealed system is the honest dividing line, especially on a chest freezer with foamed-in tubing. There's no clean access. A compressor that's seized or has internal damage falls in the same bucket. So does a cabinet with real rust holes or crushed insulation from water damage, since the foam soaks it up and never dries. Very old or off-brand units where parts are discontinued also stall out; we can diagnose it and still have nowhere to buy the control. When we hit one of those, we say so plainly instead of stacking on more visits.
What we actually do on the visit
We start with what you can hear and feel. Is the compressor running? Is there frost only on part of the coil? Is the interior light or control showing anything? Then we check the temperature the unit is really holding versus what it's set to, look at the seal, and test the components tied to defrost and airflow. Stacked units in apartments and units wedged into condo utility closets often just aren't breathing, so we check clearance too. By the end you get one of three answers: this part fixes it, this needs a part we have to order, or this cabinet is finished.
Small things to check before we drive out
A few safe checks save everyone time. Confirm the outlet has power, and don't run a freezer on a light-duty extension cord. Check the dial or digital setting; someone may have bumped it. Make sure the door or lid closes fully and no frozen bag is blocking it. Give the unit a few inches of air on the back and sides. If it's in a garage in Sylmar or Riverside during a heat wave, that alone can push it past its limit. If temps still sit high after a day, or you hear clicking every few minutes, call us and describe what you're hearing.

Chest and Upright Freezers — quick answers
Is a chest freezer harder to repair than an upright?
Sometimes. Chest freezers have simpler controls, but the cooling tubing is often foamed into the walls. That makes sealed-system leaks impractical to reach. Thermostats, lid seals, and relays are usually straightforward on either style.
My freezer runs constantly but food is thawing. What's that?
Often lost cooling capacity or a defrost failure choking airflow with hidden ice. It can also be a torn gasket letting warm air in. We check the seal, the defrost parts, and the fan before anything else.
Can you get parts for an older freezer?
Frequently yes, for common brands and common parts like gaskets, thermostats, fans, and relays. Discontinued control boards on older or off-brand models are the usual dead end. We confirm availability before promising a repair.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
You call us or type it into the form. Leaking, buzzing, not draining, blinking code. We ask a few questions and note your brand and model so the van is loaded right.
- Step 2
We pick a window
Arrival windows get built around real traffic, not wishful thinking. Tell us about gate codes, HOA elevator hours, or a tight parking situation and we plan the route around it.
- Step 3
Diagnose, then repair
Our tech opens the machine, tests the part that failed, and explains what he found in plain words. You approve the work before anything gets ordered or replaced. Common parts ride along.
