When a Dryer Is Worth Fixing — and When It Isn't

Your dryer is running but the clothes come out damp. Or it clicks and does nothing. You're standing in a laundry closet in Sherman Oaks wondering if you should call someone or just order a new one. Fair question. Here's how we actually size that up, without the runaround. Call us if you want us to look.

Age matters, but not the way you'd think

A dryer is a simpler machine than a washer. Heat, air, a drum, a belt. Many units run a long time if the vent is clear. So age alone doesn't sink a repair. What we watch for is how many separate things have already failed. One heating element on an eight-year-old dryer is a normal repair. A dryer that's had the motor, the timer, and the drum rollers done already is telling you something. We also look at how it's been used. A stacked unit in a Koreatown apartment that ran daily for a family of five has more miles on it than the year sticker suggests.

The fault type tells us most of the story

Some failures are routine. No heat often traces to a thermal fuse, an element, or a blocked vent run. Loud rumbling is usually rollers, an idler, or a belt. A drum that won't turn is often a belt. These are contained repairs on common parts. Other faults are heavier. A seized motor, a cracked drum, a rusted-through bulkhead, or a burned control board on an older machine puts you in a different conversation. Water damage and rust from a coastal garage in Redondo also change things, because salt air eats the cabinet and the fasteners around it.

Can we still get the part?

This is the quiet dealbreaker. Repairs need parts, and parts get discontinued. For a common vented dryer, elements, fuses, belts, and rollers are usually still around. For a compact ventless unit, a discontinued European stacked model, or an older machine with a proprietary control board, the part may be back-ordered or simply gone. When that happens we say so instead of chasing a ghost. We'd rather you hear it on day one than wait weeks. If a substitute part exists and fits properly, we'll tell you that too.

How we think it through on the visit

We test before we talk. Check heat, airflow, drum motion, and the vent path. Listen to where the noise lives. Confirm the machine is getting power and that the breaker isn't half-tripped, which fakes a no-heat symptom on electric units. Then we lay out what failed, whether it's one problem or several, and whether the part is available. If it's a straightforward fix on a machine with life left, we say fix it. If we'd be patching a unit that's about to fail somewhere else, we say that plainly. You make the call, not us.

Honest cases where a new dryer wins

Replacement usually makes more sense when the drum is cracked or badly rusted, when the cabinet has rotted from a damp garage or a leaking laundry closet, or when the motor and the control both failed at once. Same if the part is discontinued with no substitute. Also consider it if your HOA or building has changed the venting rules and your old unit can't meet them, since a code-compliant ventless model may be the only path. Smoke smell, scorched wiring, or a burning odor means stop using it and call us before anything else.

When a Dryer Is Worth Fixing — and When It Isn't — quick answers

My dryer heats but clothes stay damp. Repair or replace?

Often neither. That symptom usually points to a restricted vent line or a crushed transition hose. Clear the lint path first. If airflow is fine and it still won't dry, then we test the heat and cycling controls.

Is a stacked laundry unit harder to judge?

A little. Stacked units share a cabinet and sometimes a control, so we check whether the washer side is healthy too. If both halves are failing, replacing the pair often beats two separate repairs.

Should I fix a dryer I'm about to move out of?

Depends on the fault. A small repair keeps you running and keeps the unit sellable with the home. A major repair on an aging machine is money you likely won't carry with you.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

You call us or type it into the form. Leaking, buzzing, not draining, blinking code. We ask a few questions and note your brand and model so the van is loaded right.

  2. Step 2

    We pick a window

Arrival windows get built around real traffic, not wishful thinking. Tell us about gate codes, HOA elevator hours, or a tight parking situation and we plan the route around it.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnose, then repair

Our tech opens the machine, tests the part that failed, and explains what he found in plain words. You approve the work before anything gets ordered or replaced. Common parts ride along.

Why homeowners call us

  • Stacked units and tight closetsApartment and condo laundry lives in a closet with two inches of clearance. We pull, service, and reset stacked washer-dryer sets without wrecking drywall or the drain pan underneath.
