What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
Your dryer has two jobs: turn the drum and make heat. They're separate systems. So when the drum spins fine, the motor and belt are usually okay. The problem sits in the heating side, or in the airflow that heat depends on. That's good news in one way. It narrows the search. But "no heat" is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A blocked vent, a tripped safety part, a failed element, or a bad control can all look identical from the laundry room floor. We work through them in order, starting with the things that cost nothing to rule out.
Cause family one: airflow that has nowhere to go
This is where we start, because it's the most common and the least expensive. Lint builds up in the vent hose and the wall duct. Hot, wet air can't escape. Heat backs up inside the cabinet. On electric dryers, a safety part senses that heat and shuts the element off to prevent a fire. The drum keeps spinning, so nothing seems wrong. In LA we see this a lot in older buildings with long duct runs through walls or up to a roof cap. Crushed flexible hose behind a tight-fit stacked unit is another regular. Birds nesting in the exterior flap happen too, especially near the coast.
Cause family two: heating parts and safety switches
Electric dryers heat with a coil element. Gas dryers use an igniter and a gas valve. Both types have thermal fuses and limit switches that cut power to the heat when something overheats. Those safeties are one-time or resettable, depending on the model. Here's the part homeowners miss: a blown thermal fuse is almost always a symptom of a blocked vent, not a random failure. Replace the fuse without clearing the duct and you'll be back to cool laundry in a few weeks. We test these parts and look for the reason they failed. Anything behind a panel, near a gas line, or wired to power is technician work.
Safe checks you can do right now
Pull the dryer forward a little and look at the flex hose. Is it kinked, crushed, or pulled off the wall? Straighten it. Go outside and find the vent flap. Does it open with a puff of warm air while the dryer runs? If nothing moves, you've found a clue. Clean the lint screen and hold it under running water. If water beads and sits, dryer sheet residue is choking it. Scrub with soap and a soft brush. Check that a cycle like Air Fluff or Air Dry isn't selected, since those run with no heat on purpose. Check your breaker panel: electric dryers use two breakers, and one can trip while the drum still turns.

Why does my dryer heat sometimes but not others?
Intermittent heat usually points to a thermostat or limit switch cycling on borderline airflow, or a partly failed element. It heats until things get too hot, then cuts out. Almost always a venting problem underneath.
Could a clogged lint screen alone stop the heat?
Yes. A screen coated in fabric softener film blocks airflow enough to trip safety parts. Wash it with soap and water, then check the duct too. Both usually need attention at the same time.
